Whenever a new Vitamix package is advertised we tend to be the first place shoppers look for answers and advice. With the Shopping Channel in Canada promoting the Vitamix Aspire with 48oz Jar we have been receiving a lot of questions about it. This quick review attempts to answer the most popular questions we have been receiving. If your question is not answered please ask in a comment or feel free to contact us directly.

The Basics:

The Vitamix Aspire is a recently developed model specific for the Canadian market through the Shopping Channel. It is also available direct through the Vitamix.com store. As is always the case with Vitamix, this blender delivers exceptional power and value for completing all your healthy kitchen tasks. The blender itself is very similar to the Total Nutrition Center. The blending power and performance is the same but the package contents and warranty differ.

The Package:

The most exciting thing about the Vitamix Aspire is that it is the first package offered to include the Vitamix 48 oz. compact container for Canadian customers. As with every Vitamix, a tamper as well as Manual with Getting Started Guide and DVD comes in the box. The unique bonuses included is the new bilingual Recipes to Inspire cookbook in both English and Canadian French and the 101 Blender Drinks book.

The Warranty:

A major difference between the Total Nutrition Center (TNC) and the Vitamix Aspire is the warranty. While every TNC comes with a 7-year full use warranty, the Vitamix Aspire has only a 5-year full use warranty. This is common among models that are not sold exclusively direct from Vitamix.

The Bottom Line:

Without a doubt, purchasing a Vitamix Aspire is a great decision. At this time it is only available in the color Black with the compact container but it is also the only Canadian Vitamix package available with the 48 oz./1.4 L compact container.

For those that value a longer warranty, for the same price you can purchase a new Total Nutrition Center with the large container and receive the full 7-year warranty. Purchasing a TNC package also allows for a choice in color among black, white, red and brushed stainless as well as the option to add a small 32 oz./0.9 L container as well as a dry-grains container for a savings.

What’s the Same?

How is the Blendtec Designer Series similar to the now named Total Blender Classic Series? Primarily it is important to note that the motor technology is the same. Drawing 1560 Watts at 13 Amps, the Designer Series blender functions the same as the Classic Series with respect to power and performance. It even comes packaged with the same WildSide Jar that comes standard with the Classic WildSide blender.

The program features also have remained the same. While the Total Blender Designer Series does have pretty icons, it continues to offer essentially the same built-in 6 program cycles as the Classic Series: Smoothie, Ice Cream, Ice Crush, Whole Juice, Soups and Batters.

What’s the Difference?

The main difference between the Blendtec Designer Series and the Total Blender Classic lies primarily in the user control pad redesign. The Blendtec Designer Series has completely done away with push buttons and now features a touch screen much like an Apple iPhone or iPad.

In addition to the touch icons provided for using the program cycles, the control pad includes a touch slider interface allowing you to adjust to any speed by sliding your finger left to right or to jump to any speed by touching anywhere on the slider. Also in its redesign, the Blendtec Designer Series introduces a new air-flow design that is suppose to keep the motor running cooler.

Lastly, aside from the obvious change in shape the new Champagne Metallic color, the defining difference is that Blendtec has claimed to have engineered “the quietest blender [they've] ever built for home use”. Whether or not that just means it is the same, ahem, “quietness” as the Classic Series blenders remains to be seen as Blendtec has not provided any data to compare noise levels and we have not yet had the opportunity to determine if it is any quieter than their other blenders.

What’s the Conclusion?

As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The new look is different and you are either going to like it or not. The nice thing they were able to do in its redesign is keep the height the same low profile as the Classic Series that Blendtec is know for. The touch pad is very sleek and pretty eye candy but after a little getting used to, it does offer a better way to use a Blendtec. I foresee this slowly becoming adopted as a “norm” for high-performance blender interface.

Unfortunately, there has been no improvement in the program cycles. I would have loved to see some programming options added, much like how the Blendtec HP3A Series has 25 programs to choose from.

At $499.95, the bottom line is, if you like the new look, you will be paying $25 more for the fancy new controls than if you were to purchase a Blendtec Classic Series WildSide or a Blendtec HP3A WildSide for $474.95.

How Omega-3 Nutrition Is Transforming the Raw Food Paradigm

Victoria Boutenko has teamed up with Elaina Love and Chad Sarno for her latest offering on Raw Food diets. These three leaders in the raw food movement have come to the same conclusion that we have been teaching and sharing for several years – that a complete 100% raw diet is likely not the best diet. The three authors apparently came to the same conclusion after being totally raw for about the last 17 years.

The book is essentially a recipe book of 100 recipes with discussion about Omega fatty acids.

Their latest approach they have coined “beyond raw” where their diet consists mostly of raw food. A main reason for their shift in thinking is based on the research of Omega fatty acids and their impact on the human body. The studies have shown that when eaten in excess, Omega-6s can cause obesity and inflammation. Those who stick to a 100% raw diet tend to each large quantities of Omega-6s in the form of seeds and nuts.

Raw & Beyond reaches the conclusion that the majority of raw foodist have an excess of Omega-6 and a deficiency in Omega-3s and to resolve this issue steamed and “lightly cooked” foods should be added to a raw food diet.
