Green Smoothie Refresher

Posted by: John In: Green Smoothies|Recipes

Pineapple-Mango Green Smoothie
Summer is just zipping by and not without its heat waves everywhere. This green smoothie has become a regular around the house. It’s simple, sweet and refreshing. Feel free to freeze your fruit or use ice in place of water for a nice cold green smoothie on a hot afternoon. Any mango will do but we have been particularly loving the champagne mangoes this time of year.

Pineapple Mango Green Smoothie Refresher

- 1/3 pineapple (about 2 cups)
- 1 mango peeled and pitted
- 4 kale leaves without stem
- 1 cup fresh spinach leaves
- about 1 cup of water

Protein Powders Found to have heavy metals

Posted by: green smoothie junkie In: Nutrition|Resources

Alert: Protein Drinks

Consumer Reports Magazine recently published the results of their tests on 15 popular protein powders and their conclusion was that you don’t need the excess protein nor the heavy metals found.

As a reminder, we do not recommend adding any packaged protein powders to your smoothies. Eating whole foods and drinking green smoothies can provide you with plenty of quality protein.

The report tested popular protein powders and tested for arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury.  The study  found that many products contained significant amounts of heavy metals and that consuming the recommended daily servings exceeded any proposed limits on consuming such toxins.

But federal regulations do not generally require that protein drinks and other dietary supplements be tested before they are sold to ensure that they are safe, effective, and free of contaminants, as the rules require of prescription drugs.

“Most consumers and even many doctors don’t realize that in this country we’re left to simply trust the manufacturer to decide what level of quality and safety they’ll provide,” says Pieter Cohen, an internist at Cambridge Health Alliance and author of a recent New England Journal of Medicine article on contaminants in dietary supplements. Even in California, some manufacturers don’t comply with the requirements of Proposition 65 to put warnings on supplements, and enforcement seems to be lax. Sometimes warnings appear only after lawsuits are filed.

Vitamix Pro 500 versus the Vitamix 5200

Just when you think the Vitamix 5200 is the best home blender Vitamix has to offer, you have a new decision to make – as they have added the Vitamix Pro 500 – 1710 to their Professional Series.

The Vitamix Pro Series 500 blender is beautiful and has some wonderful added features not found on the Vitamix 5200. For the most part you are getting all the same advantages of the Vitamix 5200: the same 11.5 amp 1380 watt motor, the same 64oz BPA-Free container and the same 7 year warranty.

The extra goodies that the Vitamix 500 offers have been anticipated by many and welcomed by all. At first glance of the Pro 500 it’s easy to think that you are looking at a metal version of the Vitamix 5200 as it does look very similar except for the shiny brushed stainless steel finish. The base design is the same and the control layout is identical but a closer inspection of the panel reveals the distinction.

The on/off switch on the right side is now a start/stop switch and the left side hi/lo switch of the 5200 has been converted to a pulse switch in the Pro 500. The variable speed dial remains in the middle although without the hi/lo switch the dial now includes the full range of Vitamix power, 11 to 240 mph up to the 37,000 rpm. The variable speed dial also holds the major addition and benefit  found in the Vitamix Pro 500; you can now turn the speed dial to the left and choose between 3 preset blending cycles – smoothie, soup and dessert.

Just released…
the new Vitamix 5200 Brushed Stainless Finish – see it here

Cost Difference:

While the Vitamix 5200 sells for $449, the Vitamix Pro 500 retails for $649 although we have found it for as low as $598. So the real decision between the two comes down to whether or not the added features are worth the extra $150 or more to you.

Springtime Wild Greens Smoothie

Posted by: green smoothie junkie In: Green Smoothies|Recipes

I absolutely LOVE May.

I certainly enjoy the the flowers but it’s the fresh field greens that gets me really excited. I thought I’d kick things off with a super nice green smoothie treat.

I’ve been enjoying this power-packed green smoothie for a few weeks and just have to share it. This is not a recipe for those new to green smoothies. This is a very powerful and intense smoothie. If you really love and appreciate the complex flavor of greens like I do, try it without the banana. The 3 greens used are commonly found growing wild in lawns and fields (and can also be found in some health food stores and at growers market). Be prepared for a strong flavor explosion that will give you energy.

The Springtime Wild Greens Smoothie

- 1 hand-full of lambsquarter
- 1 hand-full of dandelion greens
- 1 hand-full of mustard greens
- 1 orange peeled
- 1 ripe banana
- water to blend

This makes almost 2 pints of green smoothie. I realize a “hand-full” is relative but use your intuition and experience. Use less greens if the flavor is too intense for you.

The benefits you will receive from this smoothie are amazing:

- lots of complete protein
- lost of Vitamin A, K, C
- enormous amounts of anti-oxidants
- Calcium
- Iron
- and so much more

Great for your liver and kidneys too!

Enjoy and let me know what you think.
