How in the world do we combat such a thing; and what stores would prevent it? Would Whole Foods and the stores we know and love to frequent be aware?
Unfortunately stores don't prevent it and very few are even "aware" of such things; large operations such as Whole Foods certainly don't do much about it since their shelves have plenty of such products.
What we can do to prevent it is to spread the word. When you come across any new, reliable, data, talk about it. Help people you know to understand how to read product labels and have a good idea about what is "not natural".
Also, don't be afraid to contact companies that you have trusted only to find that they use Autolyzed Yeast. In my experience they tend to fall on goverment regulations about food and labeling but the more they hear from customers that they won't support them, the better.
One bit of good news that I recently learned is that under FDA labeling, product that use "Autolyzed Yeast Extract" can no longer claim "No MSG" on their labeling!!
yay... one for the good guys
