Blueberry Hemp Smoothie
« on: December 04, 2008, 06:54:47 PM »
I made my own hemp milk this morning (we are trying out some alternatives to soy, and both the homemade hemp milk and homemade almond milk were fantastic!).  For a different approach to our normal morning smoothies, I mixed the following simple ingredients:
Handful frozen blueberries
1 banana
3 leaves kale
hemp milk to desired consistency

I made a second batch a little while later and added some frozen mango and flax seed oil as well.  It was so delicious, and my husband asked what sweetener I used (none!).

I finally got to try this and OMG!
The hemp and blueberry flavor is a fantastic combo. I'm going to be using it more now.

I didn't make hemp milk I just threw in a bunch of hemp seeds and water - I imagine the texture would be smoother with the milk. Not that the texture of mine was bad, just a little rough  ;)

You have a recipe for making that fantastic hemp milk?

You are basically correct.  The hemp milk recipe I use is: 1/4 c. hemp seeds and 1 c. water.  You can add a splash of some sort of sweetener if you wish, but I find it doesn't need any when you are making a smoothie out of it.  I put the hemp seeds in the Vita-Mix and just enough water to cover the seeds.  Mix that, and once blended, add the remainder of the water.  That makes a small amount of milk, so I just make my smoothie from there by leaving the milk as is and adding the rest of the ingredients.

I have also been using hemp seeds in my morning smoothies seems to keep the hunger away longer.
I don't make milk, I just put the hemp seeds in the Vitamix by themselves and run them for a few minutes.
I have always mixed with fresh pineapple and blueberries and used a 100% blueberry pomegranite juice for the liquid.
I will try it will the kale, sounds yummy also. Thanks for sharing

Can someone tell me if the hemp seeds impart the same flavor as the hemp protein powder I have been adding to some of my green smoothies?....I noticed it gave the smoothie a somewhat bitter aftertaste.  I also noticed that if I made a batch in the morning and put the remaining half in my thermos, it tended to begin to ferment.  What is the best way of carrying it to work so I can drink it through the day?

Thanks for any help...

I'm a total newbie trying to get started.  I never heard of hemp milk, or hemp seeds or hemp protein powder.  Where do I get this stuff?  I'm looking at a liquid diet soon due to dental issues.  Need to lose weight, have food allergies, and I'm a really picky eater. But I love spinach, romaine, and blueberries. There has to be an answer for me; I just need to get hooked up with the food items.
