Title: Green Tomatoes
Post by: rappody on October 02, 2009, 05:08:11 PM
I'm wondering if anyone has a recipe that calls for green tomatoes. I'm thinking a soup but maybe even a smoothie. Thanks!

Veronica

Hello Veronica,

I don't know of any recipes that call for green tomatoes. While they are of the color green, they are very much different than 'greens' because they are green only because they are unripe fruits.

I don't know of any way to eat them raw and would not recommend them in a smoothie but I know people bread and fry them and soup could be a good way to use them.

Tell us how the soup turns out.

Although "green" - green tomatoes are green only because they are not ripe.

I've never heard of anyone eating them raw and most discussions regarding them are against it. Green Tomatoes supposedly contain the Glycoalkaloid toxin Solanine which reportedly can cause mild to severe digestive problems, although there is plenty of debate over this.

I've never eaten raw green tomatoes and don't recommend it.

I have eaten green tomatoes, but only because of freezing temps, had to pick them early. I made salsa with them. I chopped the green tomatoes with red tomatoes, hot peppers, onions, garlic, lime juice, etc...

Now that sounds like a good use of a green tomato - nut much different than green salsa made with tomatillos
