Hello
« on: April 29, 2009, 10:08:04 AM »

Hello, everyone.  My name is Kara and I live near Chicago.  I have 2 kids, ages 4 and 8.  I purchased a vita-mix last fall, and am currently pursuing a more raw diet, in hopes of losing 50 pounds and just generally living a healthier, simpler life.  I am fortunate that my husband also loves green smoothies...I make him one every day to take to work.  The kids are slowly overlooking the fact that they are green and paying more attention to the great taste!

Thanks for the recipes and the nutritional information.  It is much appreciated as we pursue a healthier lifestyle!

I am curious as to what a typical day, food-wise, looks like and how you incorporate enough calcium in your diet.  I enter my food intake through fitday.com (compiles nutritional information from the food I eat throughout the day) and I always seem to come up short in that area when I don't drink any milk.

Thanks again!

Hello Kara!

How wonderful you are pursuing a more raw diet!! And your whole family is enjoying green smoothies. Nothing makes me so warm and fuzzy inside as when I hear about kids enjoying green smoothies :)

What does a typical day look like? Hmmm I can't remember the last time I had a "typical" day  ;) Seriously though - it changes a lot. We pretty much always have green smoothie for breakfast and at least one more meal during the day (we do our best to have at least 5 meals). We don't currently eat completely raw so we often include steamed veggies and some grain, brown rice, sprouted barley, quinoa...

As for Calcium, there are plenty of non-dairy sources for it. We often use raw tahini and also put aloe vera in our smoothies. ya know... since this is a common question I'll expand a bit more about it on the nutrition board here.

Welcome Kara!
