Timid but excited newbie
« on: February 04, 2011, 01:50:29 PM »
Hi all
So my world has always revolved around chicken, red meat and fish. I use to compete in fitness competitions where I was taught to eat protein in meat forms up to 6 times a day. So this going green thing is going to be a life altering change for me.
My vitamix came yesterday and I was so eager to use it I tried a recipe that came with the Getting Started DVD. I happened to have everything it called for in my fridge so I went for it. I am sad to say it did not go down very smoothly and I was not able to finish it. I may have jumped in to this "eating healthier" a little to fast. I have always struggled with the taste of vegetables so I figured this would be a great way to get them down and benefit from the nutritional value of them. I love fruits however this recipe had no fruits in it, just tomato, carrot, onion, spinach, red bell pepper and Worcester sauce with some ice. It was way too thick and I couldn't get into the taste. :( I have been reading a lot of post on your site and am now eager to try some of the recipes. I figure I will take baby steps to going green. I am going to start with 70% fruit and 30% greens and see how I do. I am a little concerned about how my digestive system will do with this new way of eating. I do struggle with IBS and am hoping that altering my diet by adding in green smoothies will help with the IBS.
I would love some advice on how much to start out drinking and how often. I have to admit all the post about a flatter tummy are definitely giving me hope. Any one that may have experienced the symptoms of IBS knows a flat tummy is something we never think we will have again.
Thank you and wish me luck! :)

Welcome juiz!

Great for you for making the choice to change. It takes great courage to begin and you are not alone.

Start with what you do like - fruits. Also, keep in mind that while 70/30 is a good start - it is perfectly okay to start with even less greens and work your way up. The most important thing is to start.

Green smoothies are full of fiber and nutrition and typically assist in improving digestion. Many people have reported a decrease in IBS symptoms after adding green smoothies to their diet. DO keep in mind that you want to avoid mixing fruit with heavy foods containing lots of fat and/or complex carbohydrates.

Start off with a drinking at least a pint a day and if you are are comfortable with that then drink a quart a day and add more to your day as it feels right. Remember the most important thing is not how much, but that you keep on drinking them regularly.

I wish you all the best on your journey - Good Luck!

There are many paths up the mountain but the view is the same from the top.
